UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Six individual event titles were handed out Saturday night to cap off the 2022 Big Ten Conference Men’s Gymnastics Championships at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. In addition, University of Michigan junior Paul Juda was named the Gymnast of the Championships, while Wolverine head coach Yuan Xiao was chosen the Big Ten Coach of the Year, both unanimous selections by a vote of the conference coaches.
Earlier this week, Juda was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, while Nebraska’s Chris Hiser earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. Juda is the first conference student-athlete to sweep the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and Gymnast of the Championships accolades since the latter award was first presented in 2017 (and he is the first to be selected unanimously as Gymnast of the Championships).
Yuan was unanimously chosen Big Ten Coach of the Year in his debut season at the helm in Ann Arbor, the seventh time a Wolverine coach has captured that honor. Yuan is also the second unanimous Big Ten Coach of the Year, both in the past three years (his predecessor at Michigan, Kurt Golder, was the unanimous choice in 2020).
Juda, who won the Big Ten all-around title on Friday, added an individual event championship to his resume on Saturday with a victory on the high bar (14.500), the first for a Wolverine in that event since 2013 (Sam Mikulak). Teammate Jacob Moore, who finished third in Friday’s all-around, took the title on the floor (14.400), while another Michigan gymnast, Evgeny Siminiuc, earned the crown on the parallel bars (14.500), the first for a Wolverine in that event since 2015, when Nick Hunter shared the title.
Illinois’ Ashton Anaya became the fifth Fighting Illini gymnast in the past six championships to win the Big Ten rings title (14.375), following Alex Diab’s four-year dominance in the event from 2016-19.
Ohio State’s Kameron Nelson emerged as the third Buckeye in the past two decades to earn the Big Ten vault title (and the first since Jake Martin in 2014), posting a winning score of 14.800.
Penn State’s Chase Clingman brought the home fans to their feet with a win on the pommel horse (14.425), the fifth time a Nittany Lion has captured that event title and first since 2018 (Stephen Nedoroscik).
A total of 21 gymnasts earned All-Big Ten honors by virtue of their performances at this weekend’s conference meet, including six from Illinois, five from Michigan, and four each from Ohio State and Penn State.
