Nirmala Sitharam said the Budget estimate for MNREGA was Rs 61,000 crore, and now Rs 40,000 crore additional has been added for the benefit of the labourers.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam, in her fifth and the last tranche of the coronavirus economic package, announced the allocation Rs 40,000 crores, additional to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment (MGNREGA) budget estimate to ensure that migrants are not left unemployed amid the lockdown.
Nirmala Sitharam said the Budget estimate for MNREGA was Rs 61,000 crore, and now Rs 40,000 crore additional has been added for the benefit of the labourers.
She said that this step by the government will help the labourers during the monsoon season and “since many have gone back to their village and if they enrol, they can get jobs” under the scheme.
This will help generate 300 more person days, the minister said.
