‘One Nation One Ration Card’ by to give easier ration access to migrants by 2021

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday announced that a ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC) scheme, which will leverage technology and help migrants access ration under Public Distribution System (PDS) from any fair price shop in the country.

The system will be fully set up by March 2021.

The initiative was announced as part of the government’s Rs 20 lakh crore economic package to help revive the virus-hit economy.

“This scheme will enable migrant beneficiaries to access ration under PDS from any fair price shop in the country,” said the finance minister.

She went on to say that the all-inclusive ration card will benefit 67 crore people across 23 states. It was also mentioned that 100 per cent national portability of such cards will be achieved by March 2021.

Apart from this, the government has also announced that two months of free additional ration for migrants, including those who do not have any official ration card. A total of Rs 3,500 crore will be spent on the same as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore mega economic relief package.
