Commitment continues People’s United Bank’s 7-year relationship with RunVermont
Vermont Business Magazine RunVermont announced today that M&T Bank will take over as the Title Sponsor of the Vermont City Marathon & Relay, from People’s United Bank, after closing on its merger with People’s, April 2, 2022. The sponsorship will run through 2024.
The newly named, M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay will take place, May 29, 2022, in Burlington and will consist of a full marathon, two- person relays, and three- to five-person relays. The roster of events includes an estimated 4,800 runners from across 46 states and 5 countries. A flat course that winds through Burlington and along Lake Champlain, has long been considered a community effort, recognizing all those who have had a hand in making the race a success since 1989. The race extends through much of Burlington and finishes in Waterfront Park.
“M&T may be a new name to many, but what isn’t new is our commitment to the Burlington community and Vermont as a whole,” said Michael Seaver, M&T’s Vermont regional president. “As we have since 2015, our team is excited to once again support one of the best events in Vermont and continue this partnership along with our new M&T colleagues.”
“On behalf of our staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and thousands of enthusiastic runners, RunVermont is excited to welcome M&T Bank to Vermont and one of New England’s marquis events – The M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay,” said Peter Delaney, executive director of RunVermont. “The shared values and commitment to community of both M&T and People’s United will continue to make this partnership beneficial to everyone involved.”
Additional Details
- Over 100 M&T Volunteers: M&T Bank will have over 100 volunteers providing support to the runners and the community during race weekend. Volunteers will be coming from across their footprint and will assist with everything from the Runners Expo and Mini Marathon to the start and finish line activities.
- Community Spirit Award: M&T will continue the tradition of honoring the neighborhoods that come out to support the runners by awarding the Community Spirit Award to the residents that show the most spirit, as voted on by the runners. Runners will have the opportunity to vote on the winning community during the race. The winner will receive a $500 award given to the charity of its choice, as well as a banner to display in the neighborhood.
While People’s United Bank, N.A. is now part of M&T, it will continue to operate as the People’s United division of M&T Bank – and People’s United customers should continue to use People’s United branches, websites, mobile apps, financial advisors, and relationship managers – until systems integration in the third quarter of 2022.

About RunVT and Vermont City Marathon
The Vermont City Marathon was established in 1989 by a small group of local runners who believed that Burlington, Vermont, could support a large New England marathon event in the spring. The marathon relay, one of the first marathon relay events in the US, was organized in conjunction with the full marathon, in the very first year of the race’s existence. The 1989 race brought 414 marathoners and 125 five-person relay teams to the finish line. Since 1993, the event has grown tremendously both in numbers and status in the running industry. In 1998, a 5,000-runner cap was established to ensure the quality of runner’s services and the integrity of the event. In 2001, the cap was raised another 500 runners based on runner and organizers feedback. Shortly thereafter, Runner’s World magazine ranked the race as one of the top 20 best marathons in the United States.
